I feel so blessed to have worked with these two WONDERFUL ponies, they were true "gems"! "Doc" arrived in '06 and "Jess" in '08 and boy, did they BLOSSOM in our program! They were the first un-official recipients of the Heron Mead Farm "Fountain of Youth Program." They both got so fit and strong, so confident, and their winter coats became more thick and shorter (a great sign of good health in equines). What an absolute TREAT it has been for me these last few years to see them cheerfully carting around so many riders (some whose young little legs didn't even go past the saddle flaps), endlessly walking and trotting around the ring, constantly forgiving their little or big jockeys' mistakes...
"Doc" loved to challange his little riders' balance at the trot on the lunge when he'd suddenly go from his smooth, pokey trot, to his "super trot" ("Doc's" version of an extended trot) and he'd just about bounce the kids right out of the saddle! "Jess" taught all of us show-people what a REAL trailhorse is like! She will forever be the standard against which all others will be compared, never spooky or barn-sour and always a confident, safe, and fun ride. Sometimes known as the "Corn Princess," she would occasionally uproot an entire cornstalk without breaking her stride, munching contentedly while steadily marching on!
It was truly heartwarming it was to see "Doc" and "Jess" taking their young rider's orders in the dressage ring. A judge commented on one of "Doc's" performances, "How that pony was bending correctly on that 20 meter circle without any contact with the bit is beyond me!" He was THAT generous and would often properly bend his little body around a curve with the tiniest suggestion from his rider's rein and leg. "Jess's" poise, relaxation, and steady tempo made her an instant favorite with each dressage judge, despite her incredibly unorthodox appearance. Obediently following her rider's steering commands, she would often end up in the ribbons; quite an achievement for a 26 yr. old Appaloosa/draft trail pony!
My fond memories of these stellar lesson ponies is endless and will often make me smile in the years to come. Right now, I miss those soft nickers they both became famous for: "Doc" whenever a student dismounted, and "Jess" whenever she got her "after-lesson" treat.
"THANK YOU 'Doc' and 'Jess,' for ALL the gifts you gave me and everyone who was lucky enough to know you. You both have absolutely made the world a better place and touched the hearts of so many people young and old!"
